Who are Scottish Land & Estates?

For over 100 years we have acted as the passionate voice of landowners and rural businesses, with a mission to help rural Scotland thrive!

We both champion the true value and contribution these businesses bring to the success of rural Scotland, and support our members business interests by providing knowledge, advice and relationships.

Do I need to own land to join SLE?

In addition to our landowner and landmanager members, we represent and support a wide range of land based businesses as well as those who provide services and products for the sector. So anyone with an interest in rural business can join SLE.The majority of our members are small or medium enterprises. 

If you aren't directly involved in land management or rural businesses but care about our countryside then you can join us as a Supporter member. We also have a Student membership.

Do I need to own a large business to join SLE?

No. Our members include campsites and crofters. In fact, the vast majority of our members are all small/medium enterprises.

How much does SLE membership cost?

The cost of membership depends on which category you are in. For our landowning members, membership is calculated on land type. All of our membership categories provide excellent value for money.

Can I be a member of more than one rural organisation?

Yes. We’re very happy to welcome members that are part of another membership body. Different organisations offer different services and benefits and many people are members of more than one rural organisation.

What are the benefits of joining SLE?

Some of the benefits of becoming a member of SLE include getting your voice heard in key policy debates to secure a strong future for rural Scotland and its business, having an organisation looking ahead at future opportunities and risks, and having a team of experts on hand to provide knowledge and advice to help with your business and property interests.

Do I need to live in Scotland to join SLE?

No. Our organisation is for anyone who owns or is involved in a rural business in Scotland, who owns land in Scotland, or who is passionate about supporting a thriving rural Scotland, wherever you may live.

If you don't currently live in Scotland but intend to move here to get involved in a family business, farm or estate then SLE membership is a great way of keeping up to date with everything that is happening in the rural sector. You can either be added as an additional contact to an existing SLE membership, or join us as a Student or Supporter Member.

Do I need to pay extra each time I get advice from SLE's policy team?

No. Once you join SLE as a Landowner, Professional, Equestrian or Student member, then our policy team are on hand to provide you with expert advice on all rural matters.

Our Trade and Supporter members don't have access to this service.

I live on a family farm; do we all need to join SLE?

No, only one memberships needs to be set up for your farm business and then any member of the family working on that farm can benefit from SLE membership.
