Beinn an Tuirc Distillers Limited was formed in 2016 but only began production in June 2017, with the first bottle being sold on 1st July 2017. The company is based on Torrisdale Estate, Kintyre, and was initially set up with the goal of producing Kintyre Botanical Gin, a locally hand-crafted product based and developed entirely on the Kintyre peninsula.
The Company was started by Niall, Emma and Kenny Macalister Hall, and the distillery production unit and bottling plant is situated in reused piggery buildings on the Estate.
Torrisdale Estate has embraced sustainable tourism in recent years, with its own tree planting scheme, renewable energy schemes, and the development of a gin distillery run on these principles seemed like a natural choice.
The new Distillery and Gin Still are powered directly from their on-site hydro-electric scheme, making it the first distillery of this kind in Scotland. The hydro scheme itself produces a significant proportion over and above that used for gin production, and therefore they are a net exporter of electricity.
To date, in 10 months, they have sold around 9,000 bottles of 70cl Kintyre Gin. This is more than double the figure projected within their original business plan and represents an exceptional first year of trading. Equally encouraging are the number of re-sales to stockists, who in the main are all reporting back that it is one of the top selling gins they have marketed to date.
They are currently completing the building of a small visitor area and tasting room, allowing them the ability to combine their award-winning self-catering tourism business on the estate with Beinn an Tuirc Gin to offer a unique experience for all visitors to Kintyre. The estate aims to offer gin making skills, pop up gin themed nights, as well as a host of other activities to visitors extending the range of attractions available on the Kintyre peninsula.
They are currently employing four people and aim by the end of year 2 to employee 6 FTEs.
