Grant & Jane Brand are 4th generation farmers at East Fortune Farm in East Lothian.
The Brands have always embraced opportunities to diversify and work hard to continue to develop this thriving rural business.
In 2010 the family brought livestock back to the farm with a small flock of pedigree Hampshire Down ewes. This award winning East Fortune flock now stands at 46 breeding ewes and is growing. The family have enjoyed great success at the Royal Highland Show, winning the Interbreed Pairs Championship in 2016 followed by best male & best female in 2018 and overall Hampshire Down champion for the forth year running!
In 2017 the family introduced Saddleback pigs to the farm and increased their brood of hens which now produce over 1600 eggs a week. It really is the 5th generation, young Ritchie and Robert Brand leading the way with the hens.
In early 2018 the business underwent a rebrand including a new website and social media channels to ensure that they were in a good position to tell their exciting story. Working with a local marketing consultant to support them on content, strategy and development, they have enjoyed great success in widening their reach and generating a solid customer base which includes Michelin star Chef, Tom Kitchin.
In June 2018, they opened a farm shop, The Brand Family Larder due to the demand for their home reared local produce. The farm shop sells their freshly laid eggs, home cured bacon, pork sausages, lamb chops, lamb steaks and various roasts as well as items from local producers. From fresh breads and jams to spice kits, salt rubs, pates, chocolate and yoghurts, they’ve ensured there is something for everyone.
There are also two caravan parks at East Fortune Farm that Jane and Grant opened in 2002 and 2010. Station Park is a small, peaceful and friendly park attracting motorhomes and touring caravans all year round on a choice of pitches. East Fortune CL is an award winning site, exclusive to Caravan & Motorhome Club members and again offers beautiful open views and access to the modern facilities including a laundry, WIFI and local information. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the freedom of the farm with field walks for dogs. There are woods which attract wildlife and the both parks offer a wonderful setting where you can enjoy a BBQ on those sunny evenings.
Year round storage is also available for caravans and motorhomes at East Fortune Farm benefitting customers taking up the Store & Pitch service available.
Grant and Jane also manage a flat in North Berwick which offers the perfect seaside retreat for couples or small families. Just 50 yards down the private lane and you are on North Berwick’s West Bay beach. Guests receive a welcome pack including items from the Brand Family Larder.
Future plans for The Brand Family include developing new food items using their own meats (Scottish charcuterie and savoury pies), continuing to collaborate with local businesses on various projects - an example of this being recently at Haddington Agricultural Show where they pulled together a successful ‘BBQ in a bag’ offering with Yester Dairies Ltd and Spice Pots.
A Brand’s Family Larder shopping list is now being rolled out to local Holiday rentals whereby delivery can be arranged for the customers as they check in to the property - this is already working very well with Williamstone Farm Steadings in North Berwick.
The Brands are passionate about provenance and quality of produce, and continue to spread the word via their various online and offline marketing channels. This continually adds value to the produce and benefits the locally based producers they work with.
