Estate visit focus: A day of knowledge sharing with an emphasis on commercial forestry 

Barwhillanty is a 5000acre estate in the beautiful Galloway hills of Kirkcudbrightshire, South West Scotland. It has been family run since 1884 with a holistic view to land management and conservation.  The core business includes 3200 acres of commercial forestry, a home farm of 690 acres, comprising of 900 ewes and 250 hogs, 4 let farms (a mixed dairy and 3 traditional beef/sheep farms), and 24 residential properties, a majority of which are let at affordable rents. Additionally, Barwhillanty is a sporting estate (stalking, fishing and game shooting), provide holiday accommodation, are a local wood-fuel provider and are looking to grow their business portfolio.

Oscar Yerburgh who owns and runs the estate will lead the tour, alongside Colin Kennedy from Scottish Woodlands. 

10:00: Arrival and registration

10:30: A brief overview of the estate in the Yard Bar, which will cover;
•    The recent generational change and the hands-on approach to running the estate
•    Diversification into weddings, yoga retreats and events
•    Embracing new ways of working, incorporating technology and the environment. 

11:15: Tour of the estate with a focus on commercial forestry (FSC approved), which is managed by Colin Kennedy of Scottish Woodlands: Recent planting, harvesting, farm woodland (Argo forestry), Phytophthora ramorum, biomass (3 RHI schemes in operation) 

14:00: Lunch in the Walled Garden (Wood fired pizzas and salad). Lunch is included in the price.
