Scotland’s rainforest is a globally important habitat, but where rhododendron ponticum invasion is a particular problem.

This event aimed at supporting land managers is taking place to mark Invasive Non-Native Species Awareness Week 2022. It focuses on key findings from the recently published ‘Rhododendron in the Rainforest’ report and a successful eradication case study at Glen Creran, in the rainforest zone.

Responsibility for the removal of invasive non-native species like rhododendron, rests with landowners so at this event you will have the opportunity to hear about the policy framework, grants and ways of delivering on the ground, and engage in a discussion about ways in which eradication of rhododendron ponticum can be scaled up with long-lasting results.

The ‘Rhododendron in the Rainforest’ report is calling for a dedicated long-term funding stream in order to scale up rhododendron management. This is aimed at supporting land owners and managers to deliver on the ground.

The session will be chaired by SLE Policy Adviser Karen Ramoo. There will be presentations from:

  • Arina Russell - Public Affairs Manager for Woodland Trust Scotland - introduction to Alliance for Scotland’s Rainforest and the Saving Scotland’s Rainforest project
  • Gordon Grey Stephens - Director at Native Woodlands Coop and co-author on the ‘Rhododendron in the rainforest’ report - presentation of ‘Rhododendron in the rainforest’ report and introduction to rhododendron eradication at Glen Creran
  • Charles Steuart Fothringham - Achnacone Estate and former Chair of Appin Community Council - personal experience of the Glen Creran project and work to eradicate rhododendron
  • Lindsay Bisset – Scottish Forestry Grants Scheme Manager  - support available for rhododendron ponticum management

Attendees will be invited to ask questions.
