Scottish Land & Estates in partnership with Hoddom & Kinnmount Estates and James Jones Sawmill invite SLE members to the first walk and talk event for 2021. This inaugural visit, focusing on the themes of Renewables and Forestry, will give members the ideal opportunity to gain an insight into investment into new renewables with an AD plant and behind the scenes tour of one of the seven sawmills operated by the James Jones family.

cfCharlesfield AD Plant, Hoddom & Kinmount Estates

This sawmill is one of the largest inward investments into Dumfries & Galloway by the private sector.

James Jones & Sons Ltd is a family owned and managed forest products company, now under its 5th generation leadership, operating from 25 locations strategically located across the UK. The Group has evolved through more than 180 years of trading and has been active in the following activities and sectors: sawmilling, timber engineering, pallet manufacturing, forestry and land management, iron foundry, ship building, nail manufacturing, mechanical engineering, telegraph poles, telecommunications.

David Leslie, Joint Managing Director and Rob MacKenna, General Manager will be on site to provide members with a behind the scenes look into ones of Scotland’s most modern, efficient network of sawmills that are leading the way in area such as digital scanning technology, timber treatment and much more to ensure that the timber they supply is of the highest quality.

The speed and scale of the operations are very different from earlier, and old fashioned, sawmills.  The mill processes much timber grown in this area by SLE members – this is an opportunity for growers to see how their locally produced timber is processed.
