Beaver Introduction

Many of Scotland’s fishers, foresters and farmers continue to express their deep concerns about the feral Beaver population in Tayside and I have been helping co-ordinate a measured response to the issue at a meeting with the new Environment Minister Stewart Stevenson. The issue was also raised at the most recent meeting of the Scottish Species Re-introduction Forum which was clearly split on the matter. Officers in charge of the Scottish Beaver Trial however, were more forthright in their opposition to the feral population at their September stakeholder meeting in Knapdale, Argyll because it undermines the scientific approach that underpins they are taking. It is also clear that there is support from conservation groups to leave the Tayside Beaver alone. We hope to hear from the Minister on this matter in the not too distant future.
