Deer Management Round Table

Earlier this week the Deer Management Round Table (DMRT) group met at the SNH offices in Battleby. The group briefly discussed the recently published Environment Climate Change and Land Reform Committees report on Deer Management in Scotland and received an update on progress and next steps from Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and the Association of Deer Management Groups (ADMG) and Lowland Deer Network Scotland (LDNS).  SNH expressed its desire to address the criticisms it faced within the report and emphasised going forward, lowland deer management will continue to be an important focus for its work. ADMG highlighted its focus remains on Deer Management Plan delivery and LDNS gave an overview of its work programme which includes

A working draft Wild Deer National Approach Action Plan for 2017/18 was also circulated amongst group members for discussion and comment.

Finally John Bruce provided an update on Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and the British Deer Society’s engagement in a new research project to perform DNA typing of deer found in Britain to establish the extent of their susceptibility to CWD. The research will assist with ‘modelling’ how CWD   might develop in the UK should it ever arrive. Further information on this work can be found here
