Environment Secretary Launches New Cairngorms Plan

The Scottish Government’s Environment Secretary, Roseanna Cunningham, was on the Cairngorms “Snow Roads” route this week to launch the new Cairngorms National Park Partnership Plan

While launching the Plan, Miss Cunningham also saw examples of some of the positive work happening in the areas, including meeting with delivery partners of the latest installation on the ‘Snow Roads’ Scenic Route, and Tomintoul & Glenlivet Landscape Partnership to hear about the £3.6million rural regeneration work going on there.

Scottish Land & Estates’ put in a full and extensive responde to the National Park Authority’s call for thoughts on The Plan when it was at a draft stage last summer.  The Cairngorms NPPP (2017-2022) aims to deliver a range of outcomes including an increase in woodland expansion, more restoration of peatlands as well as investment in the Deeside and Speyside Way extensions. There are also commitments to support the delivery of superfast broadband to the hardest to reach corners of the Park, more volunteering opportunities and the introduction of a ‘visitor giving’ scheme to help maintain the Park’s extensive visitor infrastructure and outstanding natural heritage. There is also a target – working with a range of partners – to deliver 200 new affordable houses in the Cairngorms National Park by 2022.

While members in the Park were able to support much of what is in the Plan, we remained concerned about some aspects of it, particularly around the Park’s preferred approach to deer management and grouse moor management.  We will of course remain engaged with the Park Authority on all of its aspirations.
