National Species Reintroduction Forum

Scottish Land & Estates attended the NSRF earlier this week in Battleby.

The Forum received an update on the Knapdale Beaver Project which is looking to apply for a licence later this summer to reinforce the beaver population here. Since the end of the trial in 2014, numbers have declined and the population is said to need urgent reinforcement if a healthy population is to remain at this site.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) is currently in the process of doing an update on field signs of beavers and is looking into the potential for reinforcing the population, including the sourcing of animals and the potential to look at using beavers from Tayside is being assessed. Ahead of this work, Scottish Wildlife Trust plan to engage with stakeholders in the area.

A brief update was also provided on the Lynx UK Trust. As yet no formal application has been made to SNH for a licence to reintroduce the species.
