Access Round Table Discussion

Earlier this week Scottish Land & Estates along with 20 other organisations was invited to attend a round table discussion at Scottish Parliament. Hosted by the Ramblers Scotland, the discussion was chaired by Richard Lochhead and Andrew Thin Chair of the Scottish Land Commission.

Discussions focused on whether there is a case for the newly-formed Scottish Land Commission to include within its first strategic plan a review of the access legislation in order to improve its implementation.

It was noted that the vast majority of individuals exercising their right of access do so in a responsible manner, however it was also recognized that this is not always the case, and irresponsible access can cause significant problems for land managers.

The role of Local Authorities and Access Officers was also discussed and concerns were raised with regards future funding for Access Officers and the consequences shortages in this will have in the longer term in supporting and/or assisting landowners and the public with access issues.
