Housing Minister, Kevin Stewart visits Dormont Passivhaus Development

Housing and Communities Minister, Kevin Stewart, visited Dormont Estate near Lockerbie on Frida 24th March with local MSP Joan MacAlpine.

Jamie Carruthers, owner of Dormont Estate, developed the eight Passivhaus scheme 6 years ago and has been undertaking monitoring to ensure the homes function as intended. The highly energy efficient homes need no heating and have automatic ventilation systems which transfer warm damp air from the kitchens and bathrooms as warm fresh air to the bedrooms and living rooms. Hot water is provided by solar panels and can be topped up by wood burning stove or immersion heater.

Tenants of two properties showed the MSPs their homes and explained the benefits of living in a Passivhaus. Both tenants reported very low energy bills and enjoyed reliably warm homes which were free from drafts and excessive moisture.
