Scotland's Moorland Forum Muirburn Code Workshops

Simon Thorpe of Scotland’s Moorland Forum heads a series of practitioner workshops across Scotland this year to consider an early draft of the new Muirburn Code.  In Sleat, Skye at the Gaelic College, Sabhal Mor Ostaig, supported by Michael Bruce, Vice chairman of the Scottish Wildfire Forum and Graham Sullivan of Scottish Natural Heritage addressed an audience of crofters, gamekeepers and environmental groups with the aim of gathering their views on every aspect of the code. There was a deal of support for the practice of Muirburn on the island from the crofting sector who see prescribed burning as a cost effective method for improving grazings however, there were voices urging caution in terms of protected areas and wildlife from a section of the audience. Michael Bruce said afterwards that risks to the environment and to wildlife could be reduced by the introduction of new techniques.
