The latest statistics on Scottish agriculture give grounds for cautious optimism, Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said yesterday.
Mr Lochhead was commenting on the June 2011 Agricultural Census which was published today by Scotland's Chief Statistician.
Among the key points in today's statistics were:
* The beef herd increased by 2,410
* The area of land devoted to cereals increased by 4.9 per cent
* Despite a decrease in breeding ewes (down 3,745) there was an increase in lambs (up 56,742)
