Non-domestic water industry developments

Scottish Land & Estates was updated on key developments in the non-domestic water industry during a recent roundtable event. The industry in Scotland is in the early stages of setting up a working group in order to define a Code of Practice for the non-domestic sector.

It was also confirmed that vacant non-domestic properties in Scotland will be brought into the water charging regime from 1 April 2017 and the English non-domestic water market will open for competition at the same time.

Noted areas for improvement included: lack of engagement with consumers over ability to change providers (from lager industrial users to micro businesses); increasing amount of complaints relating to back billing and shared supplies; and an increase in premature complaints (51.1%) made to the SPSO and therefore a need for clarity between consumers and providers over complaints procedure.
