Sheep sector review published

The report, produced by a short life industry group chaired by former UK Sheep Farmer of the Year John Scott, sets out a series of actions for the Scottish Government and the sheep industry to facilitate sustainable and long term growth.

The group’s vision for the Scottish sheepmeat supply chain is that of: “A cooperative, coordinated and efficient industry capable of delivering quality meat and wool of high ethical standards through sustainable land use that allows all links in the chain to be sufficiently profitable to reward the labour and capital invested in the business.”

Some of the recommendations relate to creating better benchmarking tools, improving knowledge exchange, improving broadband and mobile phone connectivity to improve access of remote businesses to the knowledge exchange network and the development of a sheep-farming modern apprenticeship programme.
