Fracking, Land use and Wildlife Crime at EnvironmentLINK Hustings

Following last week’s rural hustings, this week EnvironmentLINK hosted Environment Matters 2016 hustings in the University of Edinburgh.  The Panel, moderated by journalist and LINK President, Joyce McMillan, included Sarah Boyack (L), Martin Veart (LD), Mark Ruskell (Greens), Heather Anderson (SNP, and Miles Briggs (C).  The prospective candidates were asked to set out their positions in relation to renewable energy where the focus was on fracking in particular, energy efficiency, the land use strategy and payment for public goods and services, Scotland’s food system and food waste, wildlife crime and whether poaching should be considered a wildlife crime, protection for the marine environment, place-making and sustainable transport amongst others.  As such discussion was very wide ranging,  with a perhaps surprising amount of consensus about the general direction of travel on major issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss and water management.  Although how each party thinks we should achieve the final goal/s, less unexpectedly, varied somewhat.  The full event was recorded and can be found at http://www.independencelive.net/event/744.  Perhaps the event was best summed up by Joyce McMillan who said “The environment is not just one issue but is the issue that underpins all other issues………………… and covers every single aspect of important political debate”  despite this, “what we don’t have is even the beginnings of a common [environmental] strategy … across the party political divide…. [with] some elements of party politics sacrificed for this higher purpose of saving the environment on which we all depend.”
