Scottish Borders Council (SBC) is launching the new 'Scottish Borders Agricultural Awards' at the Border Union Show on Friday 29 July. The awards will highlight, celebrate and reward those farm businesses that are at the forefront of the development of the industry. They will support agricultural competitiveness by encouraging and celebrating innovation in the industry.
The awards partners - SBC, Border Union Agricultural Society, NFU Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland and Scottish Land & Estates, hope to support the continued development of an innovative and competitive agricultural sector with high quality food production as the primary purpose but also delivering other important public benefits linked to climate change, biodiversity loss, wider economic development and rural communities.
Award Partners Scottish Land & Estates regional chairman, Tony Stevenson, commented:"Agriculture remains at the heart of most rural land-based businesses in the Scottish Borders so a range of awards for innovation and competitiveness in this important sector is most welcome. While diversification is now prolific and highly successful amongst our members' businesses, the foundations for these activities tend to remain in agriculture.
"Agricultural activity also delivers a wide range of public goods such as biodiversity, climate change mitigation and vibrant rural communities. The sector has always been willing to embrace change and lead the way and Scottish Land & Estates is delighted that this innovation is now to be recognised through the Scottish Borders Agricultural Awards."
