Zero Waste

A Scotland-wide campaign targeting Scottish businesses to raise awareness of the forthcoming change in waste regulations  was launched 2nd September by Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS).  The Waste (Scotland) Regulations are designed to help meet zero waste targets, which include reaching a 70% recycling rate by 2025 and also to drive waste away from landfill.  The Regulations come into force on 1st January 2014.

After 1st January 2014 all organisations and businesses in the country will need to recycle plastic, metal, glass, paper and card or face a fine.  The regulations will also mean that any food business that produces more than 50kg of food waste each week must present it for separate collection, which will then extend to all food businesses producing 5kg of food waste each week from January 1 2016.  However, food businesses in rural areas are exempt from the food waste regulations and ZWS has provided a postcode search tool to help organisations determine whether they are eligible for exemption.
