Wildfires

There has been a spate of big wildfires in the north and west of Scotland, mostly sparked off by uncontrolled grass and gorse burning on hill farms and crofts.  Coverage in the media pointed at landowners and managers generally, although some in the media tried to imply a connection between these fires and muirburn by “estates” or for grouse management, which is clearly not the case this year.  Also, an overstretched Fire and Rescue Service had proposed a blanket ban on burning in Scotland while the dry weather continues.  If implemented, it would prevent muirburn in other parts of the country.  So, Scottish Land & Estates issued a press release on Thursday (4th April) and it was immediately covered in The Scotsman
