Unoccupied Premises Bill Passed

Despite opposition, the Scottish Parliament has passed the Unoccupied Properties Bill, which will allow local authorities to charge up to double the current level of council tax on certain homes that have stood empty for more than a year, and reduce  rates relief on empty commercial properties.   A few amendments were made to the Bill at Stage 3 and an Information Sheet will be produced for members on the provisions, which come into force from April 2013.
