Sustainable Deer Management Postgraduate course to run again in early 2013 at the University of Highlands and Islands
Following its first successful run in early 2012, UHI’s postgraduate module in Sustainable Deer management will run again in early 2013. The module will once again be available through the existing UHI MSc streams ‘Managing Sustainable Mountain Development’ and ‘Managing Sustainable Rural Development’, as well as being available as a standalone module for those wishing to take the course as part of their continuing professional development (CPD). The module has been designed to complement existing qualifications in gamekeeping and wildlife management available through UHI’s North Highland College in Thurso. The course received good uptake in its first year, with 15 students successfully completing the module. Student feedback was very positive, with students consistently rating course content and tutor input very highly.
Those wishing to enrol for the 2013 run of the course are envisioned as new MSc students, as well as professionals working in areas related to deer or general estate management across Scotland, as an opportunity for them to maintain their CPD. The course covers a range of areas, including the policy and institutional context for deer management in Scotland, deer ecology and behaviour (including population dynamics), deer management planning and a review of the science behind deer management, particularly as it relates to managing deer in upland areas in Scotland. The course is delivered in an online, flexible learning format, including PDFs, mini-web pages and video recordings.
The course continues to reflect the growing demand for ‘sustainable’ deer management in Scotland – uniting both the sporting elements of deer management and the environmental or conservation-based approaches to deer management in the Scottish Highlands. It offers an exciting opportunity for those wishing to learn about applied deer management in Scotland, as well as achieving academic recognition for those already practising sustainable deer management.
