Extension of the muirburn season into September is now a step closer with progress by a working group at the Moorland Forum, which includes the Scottish Moorland Group. This has potential benefits for all grouse moors by increasing flexibility of muirburn timing.
The next step is to monitor the ecological impact of September muirburn on a few trial sites around Scotland. SNH will grant licences to some estates to do a carefully planned programme of burning this September, in close cooperation with SNH scientists. Volunteer estates are requested urgently, so that the process is not delayed for another year.
