Environment Minister on the moor

alt

Minister for Environment and Climate Change,  Stewart Stevenson was invited to spend a day at Edinglassie Estate in Strathdon as part of his summer tour, kindly hosted by the Hon Charles Pearson and attended by Scottish Moorland Group Chairman Andrew Hopetoun with members of the WES project team.

The main reason for the visit was for the Minister to see at first hand how wildlife and sporting are managed on a Wildlife Estates Scotland (WES) pilot estate and the site visit focused on forestry replanting, farmland conservation management, muirburn, predator control, raven predation and the socio/economic contribution of grouse shooting in the Strathdon area.  The Minister is happy to attend the final rollout of wildlife Estates Scotland in the autumn and requests for Government support for the scheme via CAP were noted.  Other policy issues such as hill track planning were discussed with the Minister and his team;  he was generally very positive about what he saw at Edinglassie and supportive of well managed grouse moors.
