New book to set the heather alight

A NEW children's book launched at the GWCT Scottish Game Fair aims to entertain young readers with a jolly good adventure while exploring important conservation messages.

Captain Partridge and The Fire People is the first book to be published by Katrina Candy, Head of PR & Education (Scotland) with the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) which hit the shelves on the first day of the three-day Fair in the grounds of Scone Palace. The publication has been generously sponsored by Scotia RMA Ltd and Town & County and all the proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the GWCT.

Having waited a long time to see the book in print, Katrina was delighted with the results: "I wrote the story over seven years ago and since then have been desperate to publish it," she said. "Support from the sponsors has allowed the book to finally reach the shelves and I really hope children and adults enjoy the tale about Captain Partridge and the Highland Division of his Wildlife Regiment who get into a bit of a scrape. I have a few ideas for a series of Captain Partridge books and so I'm very keen to get feedback on my first foray into the book publishing world."

Attending the launch on Friday 29th June was Minister for Environment and Climate Change Stewart Stevenson, who said: "I congratulate Katrina on the launch of her first publication. It's great to see a new book that introduces young readers to Scottish conservation issues in such a fun and engaging way. The book also helps to educate about the management that sustains our iconic heather landscapes while helping to raise money for the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust."

Katrina has worked for the GWCT for 10 years and it is her experience in the wildlife conservation sphere that led her to develop the characters which have been beautifully brought to life by Perthshire artist Val Barr whose illustrations are stunning.   Captain Partridge and The Fire People is available to purchase at £6.99, along with charming mugs with the main character on them, from the GWCT website, http://www.gwctshop.org.uk/  and will soon be available at selected outlets.
