A new long distance route, the John Muir Trail, is being developed by Scottish Natural Heritage working with local authorities. The route will be promoted as part of Scotland’s Great Trails an initiative which Scottish Land & Estates highlighted to members in the Spring edition of LandBusiness.
The aim is to use, as far as possible, existing routes such as newly designated core paths, sustrans and other routes which have already receive some public funds, to make up this new long distance route. It will run from Helensburgh to Dunbar, across central Scotland taking in the southern tip of Loch Lomond, skirting to the north of Glasgow, through North Lanarkshire, Falkirk and West Lothian to South Queensferry, then on through Edinburgh and down the East Lothian coast.
Scottish Natural Heritage advises that landowners and managers will be contacted on a case by case basis as the route takes shape.
