Tax breaks not the way forward for land letting

Responding to National Farmers Union Scotland (NFUS) criticisms that the budget has not included tax incentives to encourage the letting of agricultural land, Scottish Conservative Rural Affairs Spokesman Alex Fergusson MSP said:

“I fully endorse the desire of the NFUS and others to encourage the letting of land in Scotland, but I am far from convinced that ‘tax breaks’ are necessary to achieve it.

“After all, the same tax system applies across the UK, and the letting of land has increased south of the border over the last decade, whereas it has decreased in Scotland.

“What we need to look at are measures that will truly re-invigorate the tenanted sector and restore the trust between tenant and landlord that has been so badly eroded by the SNP since the turn of the century.”
